VISITOR ATTRACTIONS - DISABILITY ACCESS


Sligo Library


Access for people with disabilities include disabled parking, disabled toilets, ramps, Induction loops and directional signage. Also includes facilities such as reading magnifiers at all desks and software such as JAWS and ZOOMTEXT available on selected public computers.

City Hall

The car park has thrCity Hallee accessible parking bays and a drop off area.The main and side entrance doors are clearly defined and are fitted with power-assisted doors to provide easy access for all building users. Access routes within the building are spacious and unobstructed.

Reception counters throughout the building are accessible to wheelchair users and fitted with loop systems to accommodate hearing aid users. A variety of seating types is provided for the public in corridors and reception areas. To improve safety for building users, the open risers in the main staircase have been filled in.

 

The Model

The Model in Sligo Town, home of The Niland Collection, is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary arts centres. Built in 1862 as a Model School, the present building has been extended by a third to create this world-class visitor centre. The building boasts a restaurant and coffee dock, a bookshop, gallery circuit, a purpose built performance space, and a suite of impressive artist studios on the top floor with enviable views of Sligo Town and county. This award-winning building is home to the impressive Niland Collection of art, one of the most notable collections in Ireland. Featured works include John and Jack B Yeats, Estella Solomons, Paul Henry and Louis Le Broquy among others.The Model is wheelchair accessible. There are two dedicated parking spaces at the side of the building which are reached through the driveway off The Mall. Access to the building from these spaces is via their service entrance. You ring the doorbell at the service entrance (clearly marked) and a staff member will assist your entrance. To reach The Mall entrance by car follow the instructions above, but once you are on Connaghton Road take the second right onto Lake Isle Road, and then turn left at the cross roads onto The Mall. The Model driveway is about 500 meters up The Mall on your left hand side and has a wheelchair accessibility sign.

Hawkswell Theatre

The Hawk's Well is a 340 seat theatre located in Sligo town. They host a diverse programme of arts and entertainments including comedy, professional and amateur drama, a wide range of music from traditional and jazz to opera, plus dance, pantomime, children's theatre and comedy.

The bar/foyer hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions by professional and amateur artists and photographers. The Hawk’s Well Theatre aims to be accessible and welcoming to everyone and they are committed to making your visit as easy and enjoyable as possible. Please tell them when booking if you have any special requirements and they will do their very best to facilitate you.

The Hawk's Well Theatre has a maximum of four spaces for wheelchairs in the auditorium. Please advise the box office when booking to enable them to allocate a seat accordingly. Parking for people with disabilities is located at the side of the building on the Lungy and wheelchair access to the theatre (including the bar and box office) is available from here.

Guide dogs are welcome - please let them know at time of booking so that they can allocate the right seat.

Doorly Park

 

Doorly ParkA fine riverside amenity, Doorly Park is around 15 minutes from Sligo town centre. Once a wetland, now a semi wild landscaped park, it was transformed in the 19th Century by Colonel W.G Woodmartin. Today, lakes, woodland and wetlands offer great picnicking and walking.There is a nature trail that takes in the  best plant life, wildlife and views. Highlights include reed beds, native woodland and magnificent mountain views. The park is named after the late bishop of Elphin, Dr Edward Doorly. Recent developments include new cycling and walking trails. There is a  walking trail with looped link pathways to connect existing woodland and cycling pathways. Additional facilities include a car park and picnic tables. Doorly Park is accessible for all.

                     

                             

 

Strandhill Beach

Strandhill Beach is an area of great natural beauty located 5 miles west of Sligo town with panoramic views of Knocknarea and Benbulben. As well as being an extremely popular surfing spot, Strandhill has a number of visitor attractions including Voya Seaweed Baths, Strandhill Peoples Market, Bella Vista Bar & Restaurant, Shells Café, the Strand Bar & Restaurant, Mammy Johnston’s ice-cream shop. Disabled parking spaces are available along the promenade in Strandhill. A wide even promenade extends the length of the Strand.
